Transition Timeline

The timeline below illustrates NC State’s transition from Moodle to Canvas and includes the key milestones that will guide our community of instructors through each phase. It provides a high-level view of when development, access and teaching will take place throughout this multi-year effort. 

Due to the complexity of this transition process, items on the timeline are estimates and are subject to change.

Timeline Details

  • Fall 2025: Pre-Planning
    • NC State negotiates the scope of work for the transition.
    • DELTA begins project planning for the Canvas migration.
  • Spring 2026: Research and Development
    • DELTA and a limited Faculty/Staff Evaluator cohort to review Canvas features, configuration options, migration procedures, and compatibility with external tools.
    • No active courses in Canvas.
  • Summer 2026: Limited Access to Canvas
    • Faculty and staff can request to join a second Evaluator Cohort for Canvas. There will be an orientation and a task list for members.
    • Instructors with prior Canvas experience can apply to teach a course in Canvas in Fall 2026.
  • Fall 2026: Canvas Project Spaces Available
    • Beginning October 5, any interested faculty and staff can create “Project” spaces to begin exploring Canvas.
    • DELTA will provide initial onboarding, basic training, and support resources.
  • Spring 2027: Canvas Training and Onboarding
    • Beginning March 15, Canvas and Moodle spaces will be available for Summer 2027 and Fall 2027 courses.
    • DELTA to provide full instructional training and support resources.
  • Summer 2027 – Spring 2028: Teach in Canvas or Moodle
    • Canvas is fully available for all faculty and staff to use for academic instruction.
    • Moodle will still be supported during this time.
  • Summer 2028: Moodle No Longer Available; All Courses in Canvas
    • Moodle will no longer be available for use with active courses.
    • All active courses must be taught in Canvas.
