Canvas Security Incident Update

NC State Digital Education and Learning Technology Applications (DELTA) was notified by Instructure on Thursday (5/7/2026) of a cybersecurity incident affecting its Canvas learning management system. We are monitoring the situation and are coordinating with Instructure and NC State’s Office of Information Technology to assess any potential impact.

NC State is not currently using Canvas for instruction. The university is in a preparatory phase for a future transition to Canvas, and no courses have been offered to students. As a result, no student data was housed in our Canvas instance. Any potential exposure is limited to a small number of employees and test accounts established during the transition planning process.

We will continue to monitor the situation and take the necessary steps to protect affected individuals.

LMS Transition Overview

NC State is currently transitioning to a new learning management system: Canvas by Instructure. This will be a multi-year transition project, and faculty will receive clear timelines and guidance throughout the process.

In July 2025, the University of North Carolina System Board of Governors unanimously approved a resolution to standardize the use of a single, unified LMS across all institutions in the UNC System.

Canvas by Instructure was selected as the LMS platform in order to consolidate technology across campuses, increase cost efficiencies and provide greater familiarity for incoming first-year and transfer students.

DELTA will be managing NC State’s transition from Moodle to Canvas. This website will be updated regularly with project updates, including a timeline, high-level roadmap and initial steps for the move from Moodle to Canvas.
