Last Updated: 8/28/2025
What We Know
- The University of North Carolina System Board of Governors unanimously approved a resolution on Thursday, July 24, 2025, to standardize the use of a single, unified LMS across all institutions in the UNC System.
- The UNC System is in the process of investigating LMS platforms and has engaged with NC State to understand our current LMS usage and tools (Moodle).
- An official decision on the specific LMS tool has not yet been announced.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why is the UNC System moving to a single LMS?
The UNC System’s 17 institutions currently use three different learning management systems under separate contracts. Moving to one LMS will create a consistent technology across campuses, which will:
- Reduce barriers for first-year students and students transferring across institutions, since students will only need to learn and use a single platform.
- Reduce costs and eliminate wide price differences currently paid across institutions.
- Make it easier for faculty to collaborate across institutions and generate more opportunities for shared innovation.
Has an LMS system been selected?
At this time, the UNC System has not shared or announced which LMS tool universities will be moving to.
What is the timeline for the transition if a new LMS is selected?
We do not yet know the timeline for any transition, but we will share as soon as those plans are announced. We expect that if a new LMS is identified, the transition will be a multi-year process.
How will this impact me?
If Moodle is not identified as the central LMS for the system, faculty and instructors will eventually need to transition their courses into a new LMS system. This will not be an overnight transition, and DELTA will provide hands-on training and support throughout the process. DELTA will share more information on timelines and expected impacts as we receive more information.
