Bethany Smith
Bio
Bethany Smith is the Director of Instructional Support and Training in DELTA at NC State University, where she leads faculty development programs, instructional technology support services, and strategic initiatives that enhance teaching and learning with technology. With more than 20 years of experience in higher education, Bethany brings deep expertise in instructional design, faculty engagement, and large-scale educational technology initiatives.
In her current role, Bethany oversees DELTA’s faculty training programs, Faculty Fellows initiatives, course quality efforts, and the learning technology help desk. She provides strategic leadership for instructional support services, including budgeting, personnel management, and cross-campus collaboration to advance innovative and effective digital learning practices. Prior to this role, she served as Associate Director of Instructional Technology Training, where she led enterprise-wide training initiatives, expanded multimodal professional development offerings, implemented new evaluation and reporting systems, and supported academic continuity during the rapid transition to online teaching.
Before joining DELTA, Bethany held leadership and instructional roles in NC State’s College of Education and the Friday Institute for Educational Innovation. Her work has included directing instructional technology centers, teaching undergraduate courses on instructional technology, leading grant-funded leadership academies, and supporting faculty through major initiatives such as LMS transitions, accreditation reviews, and web redesign projects.
Bethany is an active contributor to the higher education technology community, serving in leadership roles across campus and within the UNC System. She regularly presents at regional, national, and international conferences on faculty development, learning technologies, course design, and digital transformation.
