HS 201: H5P Flashcard Moodle Integration for Introductory Horticultural Science

HS 201: The World of Horticulture explores principles of plant growth and development relating to production and utilization of fruit, vegetable, floricultural and ornamental crops. The course is unique in that it is offered to both horticultural sciences majors and students outside of the department. In many cases, this class is the first time students are introduced to scientific 

terms and exposed to plant anatomy and plant genetics. With this in mind, instructor Remi Ham wanted to incorporate digital flashcards using the instructional tool H5P for students to practice new horticulture vocabulary and better retain information presented during class lectures. To accomplish this, Ham turned to DELTA and received support from an Instructional Tools Express Grant.  

Instructional Challenges

  • Develop virtual interactive flashcards for majors and nonmajors in an introductory horticulture course that would help with retention of complex and new information and vocabulary, such as plant classifications, plant biology and genetics. 
  • Present course material and new content in an interactive format that students find engaging, and which is scalable to larger or smaller courses. 
  • Integrate H5P flashcards into an existing Moodle course using the H5P Moodle plugin.

Highlights/Solutions

  • Students find the H5P flashcards fun to use and appreciate that they provide instant, interactive feedback, and report that they are useful tools for review before taking quizzes and exams. 
  • Integrating H5P flashcards into Moodle is easy for instructors using the H5P Moodle Plugin and grades can be easily integrated with the Moodle gradebook.
  • H5P empowers instructors to easily create reusable and scalable interactive activities and knowledge check questions in multiple formats.
