Gamification Plugin for Moodle

The Gamification Plugin for Moodle provides several flexible, easy-to-use functions instructors can employ to gamify their courses. The tools available in this plugin drive student engagement by facilitating three core aspects commonly found in video games: objectives, progression, and feedback. Game objectives provide players with incentives to perform, encourage participation and a desire to complete the assigned goals.

Gamification is the practice of introducing principles and design concepts from games into non-game environments to increase participation, engagement and performance.

The Gamification Plugin for Moodle provides the following tools to help you gamify your course:

  • Point Sets help you and your students track their progress
  • Objectives provide students with tasks
  • Rewards give students incentives to engage with the course

Tip:

When using the Gamification Plugin, the result is often made up of highly interconnected systems of activities, Objectives, and Rewards. It is strongly recommended that you plan the gamified aspects of your course in advance. Poor planning can impact the cleanliness of the implementation, as Achievements and Point Sets cannot be removed after creation, nor can Objectives and Rewards triggered by students.

Use the following framework to help minimize the time you spend backtracking and troubleshooting when building your gamified course in Moodle:

  • Determine your course learning objectives and the reward students receive after each learning objective is met.
  • Choose the Moodle activities you will use for each learning objective.
  • Design Objectives and determine how each interacts with Moodle activities and other gamification functions.
  • Choose Rewards for the Objectives that correspond to the final reward for each learning objective.
