ELM 556: Transitioning Elementary Math Specialist Master of Education Courses from Blended to Online Format
The goal of this project was to align NC State’s online Master of Education course offerings focused on elementary math with other universities also offering the same types of program in order to reach more students. The team developed and converted math course content from a blended to an online format for complete online offering by applying adult learning principles and strategies.
Instructional Challenges
- The team needed to convert blended learning and face-to-face courses to a completely online format while maintaining a sense of community.
- There were a large number of courses in the program.
Highlights/Solutions
- Course materials were consolidated, leading to fewer textbook needs
- Teachers were trained to be leaders in math education.
- A sustainable course template for the Math Ed. program was created.
- A course flow to use throughout all Math Ed. program courses was identified.
- A reusable group peer review form was designed to help instructors monitor issues.
- Customized tables for each course were designed to illustrate the three focuses to be applied.
