DELTA’s VCS Began Offering Video Streaming Services

DELTA’s Video Communication Services (VCS) began offering video streaming services to meet some of the distance education needs of NC State University. VCS used Dell 420 workstations equipped with high-level video streaming capabilities including archiving and live webcasting. VCS broadcasted live via NC State’s RealServer G2 from RealNetworks. VCS also had the ability to capture any video program, archive it, and place it in our AFS server space on campus. VCS supplied clients with URLs that access these files and stream them out to the public via NC State’s RealServer G2. These URLs were placed on our clients’ websites. These files could be accessed using RealPlayer versions 5, G2, 7or 8.

The NC State University Library used VCS streaming services to downlink satellite broadcasts of the Soaring to Excellence 2000 series. As NC State University Library leaders wished for all employees to see the broadcasts, VCS did the live and archived webcasts of all the programs.
