First developed for TMS 211, Fiber Science, the MicroExplorer 3D allows students to learn about microscopes.
Instructional Challenges
- Distance Education (DE) students may not have the opportunity to use a microscope directly. However, students should be able to identify the parts of a compound microscope, understand how the microscope works and learn how to use it.
Solutions
An interactive website and mobile application was developed using Unity 3D, a game engine or framework from which 3D environments, games and simulations can be built. The application includes a 3D model of a compound microscope with supporting photographs, video, and textual descriptions of each part. Users can pan and zoom in on various parts and read and listen to descriptions as often as they like.
