    • ECD 652: Enhancing the Skill Development of Counselors-in-Training: Video Processing Demonstrations

    ECD 652: Internship in College Counseling is a 300-600 hour internship course that provides students with professional experience in counseling and related services in higher education with on-site supervision from a qualified professional. Student interns are expected to learn a broad spectrum of counseling and related skills. Weekly meetings with faculty and on-site supervisors are a requirement. Associate Teaching Professor and Program Coordinator of Counselor Education Angela Smith discovered in a 2020-21 narrative study that after taking the course, students had ongoing questions and concerns related to the application of specific counseling skills because of outdated tools and videos. She wanted to update the content and delivery methods used to include multicultural and current client concerns that are relevant to today’s industry standards. Smith turned to DELTA for support by applying for one of DELTA’s Exploratory Grants to create a relevant, interactive counseling approach while using innovative delivery methods.

    • Identifying the best tool to use for interactive learning
    • Ensuring that students’ needs are met and their specific questions are answered during their internship
    • Preparing counselors-in-training for their field work experiences
    • Supporting counselors-in-training with regard to refining and developing skills, clinical judgment and clinical instincts

    Highlights/Solutions

    • Developed four videos that focus on:
      • Misuse and use of questions in a counseling session with processing
      • Misuse and use of reflection of feelings in a counseling session with processing
      • Managing multiple skills including the advanced skills (the building of clinical judgment and instincts) in a counseling session with processing
      • Working with the internal experiences of the counselor-in-training: demonstration of how these manifest themselves in session and addressing them in a supervision example
    • Created updated visuals
    • Developed and implemented a Chatbot to deliver an immersive student experience
    • Created an introductory/demo video hosted on YouTube
