  • ECI 519: Developing and Leveraging an XR Repository to Promote, Distribute, and Inform Education Professionals in the Areas of XR

ECI 519: Special Problems in Learning Design and Technology Special Problems in Learning Design and Technology is a graduate-level course incorporating various extended reality (XR) tools to introduce future educators to XR technologies. The course resulted from the work of a previous exploratory grant that demonstrated the need for a repository of XR-related resources for the campus community. Associate Professor Julia McKeown in the Learning Design and Technology program in the College of Education was the principal investigator in the original grant, resulting in a successful collaboration between DELTA, NC State Libraries and McKeown. Her goals with this grant were to continue development of this resource, develop new materials for inclusion and consolidate existing materials into a set of consistent formats. McKeown turned to DELTA for support by applying for one of DELTA’s Exploratory Grants because of the innovative result of her first grant.

While this proposal would benefit several courses directly (ECI 512, ECI 513, ECI 514, and ECI 519), it is expected that this could benefit any education course that wants to include aspects of AR,VR, or MR into their curriculum. It is also expected that these resources would be made available to a larger audience outside of NC State that has an interest in the XR space. One goal would be to make NC State a leading resource for information on XR while also providing examples of how these technologies and applications are being used in educational settings.

    Instructional Challenges

    • Defining best practices for text and video content for the XR resource site to encourage quality community contributions
    • Producing exemplar videos and articles to model these best practices
    • Providing resources that help community contributors create high quality submissions
    • Improving the content and quality of student-submitted video projects and standardizing the external presentation of these videos (and resources)
    • Expanding the reach of courses that could benefit from including XR into their curriculum beyond the known benefactors

    Highlights/Solutions

    • Exemplar project video (covering the Shelton Leadership VR project)
    • Template video graphics that contributors can use for making project videos in the future (with the intent of adding to the XR Resource Site)
