Helen Velk

Communications Specialist

Bio

Helen Velk, DELTA’s communications specialist, started working at DELTA in October of 2021 as a professional temporary employee before accepting a permanent position in March 2023. Prior to working with DELTA, Helen was an award-winning journalism instructor and publication advisor at Ravenscroft School in Raleigh, N.C. (Helton Award, 2009). She was an active member of the Advisors’ Association Board of the North Carolina State Media Association (NCSMA) from 2008-2017, also serving as the 2012-2013 president. Helen also worked as a freelance writer for WakeMed Health and Hospitals.

Helen brought her passion for journalism and education to her position with DELTA. She provides writing, editing, branding expertise for the DELTA News website and the monthly newsletter, DELTA Connections. In addition, she handles the social media creation/management for the DELTA accounts.

Helen is committed to promoting DELTA and its services to a broader audience by being a member of NC State’s StateComm group as well as the NC MarComm U group which includes communication professionals from across the state. She facilitates communication efforts between DELTA and other college and unit communicators to increase awareness and share DELTA news with the greater community.

Continuing education is important to Helen and she prioritizes lifelong learning. She completed the Mental Health First Aid USA certification from the National Council for Mental Wellbeing in January 2023, became a Certified Digital Marketing Professional AMA Professional Certified Marketer PCM in Digital Marketing (CDMP) through the Digital Marketing Institute and the American Marketing Association in May 2022 and completed the Confronting Bias: Thriving Across Our Differences offered by LinkedIn Learning in October 2021.

Originally from Ohio, Helen moved to California to earn a Bachelor of Arts in journalism from California State University, Fresno. She also acquired a Certified Journalism Educator credential from the Journalism Education Association in 2008.
