Inside DELTA: 5 Questions with Latoya Howard

Latoya Howard has been an accountant at DELTA since January 2022. While making strong connections with others, she has been helping manage finances and making sure everyone at DELTA has support to ensure their goals are met and effectively distributed throughout the departments.

How would you describe your position at DELTA?

“From my perspective, I’m ensuring that the departments in which we’re serving are able to provide services to learners and instructors.  Our mission entails creating and nurturing an innovative, effective and impactful digital learning experience,” Howard said. “We are maintaining compliance, making sure each department is meets all of the requirements to receive the funds and are distributed correctly. My role is just ensuring that all the departments are able to do what they need to do without worrying about whether the finances are being managed correctly.”

Howard enjoys working and collaborating with other departments at NC State to figure out solutions to problems. Her accounting degree from Albertus Magnus, Master’s in Human Services and N.C. Real Estate License has proven to be helpful in these partnerships.

What is the most challenging part of your job?

“The most challenging aspect of my job is ensuring I am communicating about the finances in a way it will be easily understood,” Howard said.

Because most people she works with aren’t accountants, being careful with accounting lingo is a must. She considers the audience in all of her communication, especially regarding job-specific language.

What makes your job special?

Howard enjoys helping the departments achieve the goals set forth. Howard and the departments collaborate on the budget process and financial management. This ensures that finances are being
maintained according to the plan and allows departments’ visions to become a reality.

“When the year is finished, you get to say ‘Wow, we accomplished that goal,’” Howard said. I find it very rewarding to help the departments accomplish the goals set forth.”

What is the best part of your job?

“I would say the best part would be the people,” Howard said. “The collaborative nature of DELTA’s environment is like none other that I have ever experienced.”

What do you like to do outside of work?

Howard enjoys spending time with her family. While in Connecticut, she enjoyed assisting her husband as an organizer for National Night Out, a community-building event focused around police and community partnerships. Since moving, Howard and her family have continued a commitment to service through her church at New Breed Church in Fuquay-Varina.

“We have a lot of activities with Go-Groups, interacting with individuals from church outside of church — we call it living life together,” Howard said. “I really enjoy being a part of the outreach services that we have, such as that provides school supplies, clothing drive and meals at the Ronald McDonald House to name a few. Giving back to the community is what I really enjoy.”
