While you may have been to Summer Shorts in the past, this year we’ve added new events all focused on the theme of Driving Student Success:
- Pre-conference WolfWare Bootcamp
- Online and face-to-face sessions
- Second-annual DELTA-Con
Summer Shorts will be held Aug. 13-17 from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. with morning refreshments and lunch provided each day.
The pre-conference WolfWare Bootcamp is Monday, Aug. 13 in D.H. Hill Library. The day starts with an introduction to WolfWare and getting started with Moodle sessions followed by lunch. The two afternoon sessions will allow participants to choose an instructional tool and facilitators will cover the ins and outs of the technology.
Whether you are a new faculty member looking to become familiar with Moodle or a seasoned NC State instructor, this event is just what you need to get your semester started!
The main conference sessions begin Tuesday, Aug. 14 with a keynote from our Faculty Fellows followed by a variety of sessions on innovative instruction and student engagement. Session presenters are from a variety of departments and colleges, allowing participants to learn from different backgrounds and viewpoints. In addition, this year’s sessions will be one hour long.
Wednesday, Aug. 15 kicks off with Speed Geeking — a brand new event to Summer Shorts where attendees will explore technology tools and topics. Presenters will be given five to eight minutes to demo a process and engage in a Q+A session before moving on to the next group. A variety of sessions follow Speed Geeking including topics such as creating interactive content in Moodle with H5P and engaging students with VoiceThread.
The day wraps up with a Quality Matters panel featuring faculty members who participated in the spring 2018 Online Course Improvement Program (OCIP). The group worked to have the first online courses at NC State certified for quality using QM’s rubrics, evaluation tools and peer-review process.
Thursday, Aug. 16 is all about effective online teaching, offering four sessions held online on topics such as designing an amazing Moodle course and student-to-student interaction in online courses.
The second-annual DELTA-Con will be held Friday, Aug. 17 in the Center for Technology and Innovation. DELTA-Con is an unconference where participants determine the agenda. Instructors, instructional designers and technologists from around the area are invited to attend and discuss the growing trends in higher education. We will set the agenda the morning of, so bring your ideas!
There are three separate registrations this year: for pre-conference WolfWare Bootcamp, general Summer Shorts conference sessions, and DELTA-Con. It is not necessary to sign up for individual sessions or tracks this year.
NC State faculty, staff and graduate students are welcome to attend Summer Shorts. DELTA-Con is available to all higher-education faculty, instructors and staff.
We will provide lunch to participants for all in-person sessions. We hope you can join us for the whole week!
