April 2019 Mediasite Administrator Update

There are a number of important events and activities over the next couple of months: Two MUG meetings in April; new Mediasite U website and training materials available; college transitions to mediasite.wolfware; and post-semester maintenance.

Carolinas Chapter MUG Meeting April 24, 2019

The next community gathering of the Carolinas Chapter MUG is Wednesday, April 24, 12-5:30 p.m. at Duke University School of Nursing.

Duke University School of Nursing
Pearson Building
307 Trent Drive
Room 1103
Durham, North Carolina 27710
Google Maps: Duke School of Nursing
(There’s a parking garage across the street from it)

It’s worthwhile to attend these chapter meetings. It’s good to network with other entities to see what they are doing and how they’re approaching common issues. Sonic Foundry representatives will also be on hand to fill us in on the product development roadmap and to answer any of your questions about “all things Mediasite.”

Most of you are likely on the Sonic Foundry email list for announcements, so look for more info in your email. Lunch is usually provided at these events, but we haven’t gotten a solid confirmation on that yet. We’ll pass along additional information about the event as it becomes available.

NC State MUG Meeting May 1

Note the different location – The next NC State Mediasite Users Group (MUG) meeting is one week after the Carolinas Chapter meeting, on Wednesday, May 1, 11 a.m. – 2 p.m. in the Witherspoon Student Center, Room 126 (The Washington Sankofa Room).

The Witherspoon Student Center is located on Central Campus at 2810 Cates Avenue, on the north side of Cates, east of the Dan Allen/Cates Avenue intersection. Here’s the Google Maps Street View.

We will discuss scheduled mediasite.wolfware transitions and end of semester maintenance. Sonic Foundry reps will be available for any product questions you may have. We encourage all college-level Mediasite Admins and associated IT personnel to attend. Lunch will be provided. We’ll share RSVP info closer to the date.

New Mediasite University Training Materials

  • Sonic Foundry’s Mediasite U has a new look, new materials and a new URL.
  • The URL is https://learn.mediasite.com/ and SOFO log-in is not required to view the material
  • Courses are divided into 4 categories, for these roles: Learner, Instructor, Application Administrator and Server Administrator.
  • Each module has multiple videos. For example “Up and Running with Your Recorder” has 21 separate video “lessons” covering how to set up and connect recorders, with a separate lesson for each recorder hardware version.

There are new training videos for content creators to which you can direct your faculty:

May 2019 OIT Maintenance Window

OIT will be performing maintenance of systems May 11-12. Any OIT-supported systems could be impacted during this time. Check SysNews for status updates.

Issues don’t always arise, but when they do, they almost always have to do with authentication.

May 2019 DELTA Maintenance Window

Major maintenance of DELTA systems will take place between Spring and Summer semesters, from Tuesday, May 13 through Saturday, May 18, 2019. Service disruptions could occur at any time during the maintenance window. Updates will post to SysNews.

Mediasite.wolfware Transitions May 2019

All remaining college instances, except College of Engineering, will migrate to mediasite.wolfware during the May maintenance window.

Velocity Service Retires May 24

Just an FYI: Velocity is (soon to be “was”) a service created in 2008 by CNR for the transfer of large digital files (like media files) at NC State. At that time there weren’t online services (like Dropbox, etc.) available. Now that there are, Velocity is being retired. Read the press release.

Note from Sonic Foundry

Recorder software images and versions are dot odd numbers, and server versions are dot even numbers.

  • After the 7.1 recorder version series, the next recorder iteration will be 7.3.xx,
  • The next server version after the 7.2 series will be 7.4.xx.
