Mediasite Administrator Update, April 2015

As part of an ongoing effort to keep Mediasite administrators on campus informed, we created this DELTAwire article specifically for you! For help with any Mediasite questions, please contact us at mediasite-help@ncsu.edu.

This article includes information on the following topics:

Editing Content Prior to Version 7

If you have experienced any issues with editing content created in versions prior to version 7.x, this is due to a setting which had to be chosen when we migrated from version 6 to version 7. More specifically, the audio files for the MP4 files are relying on the audio from the WMV. We are working with Sonic Foundry to write a SQL query to change the audio setting within the database on all the presentations. We will update the listserv as soon as we have been provided a solution from Sonic Foundry and the issue has been corrected.

If there is a presentation you are unable to edit, please send email to mediasite-help@ncsu.edu. DELTA has several work arounds we can assist you with until Sonic Foundry has a permanent solution.

Known Issues Seen on Recorders

DELTA has received reports regarding the following issues affecting recorders across campus. We are working with Sonic Foundry on identifying the cause of the issues and will notify everyone via the listserv on further resolution. If you see any of these issues, the current recommended resolution is to restart the software application and/or sometimes the recorder.

Line 1 Out of Memory Error

The recorder locks up and displays the message “Line 1 Out of Memory Error”. This error is not seen if you are monitoring recorders in the management portal, but is only seen when you’re in front of the recorder, as it is a Microsoft Windows error. When this occurs and the recorder is restarted, some settings may be lost after the reboot. Currently, this cannot be tied to a specific version as it has been seen in multiple versions across campus.

Audio Settings

Lost audio settings after a standard nightly recorder reboot are occurring. We do not know if this is directly related to the Line 1 memory error or if this is a separate issue. However, this is a known issue with Sonic Foundry and should be resolved in a future release, currently targeted for 7.0.24.

Crestron Controls

We have received a report from PCOM that their record button is sporadically not being displayed on their crestron touch panel, however, the schedules are loaded properly in the management portal. This has not been reported or seen from other groups on campus who are using the crestron panels and crestron module. We also do not know if this is related to the Line 1 Out of Memory Error.

Known Issue with the Mediasite Scheduler

If you are using a schedule to create your presentations and a recording fails to start and record, this could be related to a current known issue being investigated by Sonic Foundry. The presentation which will fail will be the recording scheduled for the day before the end date in the schedule. Currently, the workaround is to move the recurrence’s end date out one extra day.

Known Issue with Recurring Reports

If you create a recurring report and the recipient receives a link to the report through email, but does not have authorization to view the report, this is a current known issue being investigated by Sonic Foundry.

Mediasite Monthly Server Maintenance

The monthly Windows Updates for the Mediasite servers will be installed between 5-8 a.m., on April 18, 2015. The servers will be rebooted one at a time. There will be a brief outage when the database and file servers are rebooted, but no other interruptions are expected. For further information, please see https://wolfware.ncsu.edu/updates-maintenance/. This date is outside of our previously published maintenance windows due to OIT performing major data center maintenance on April 11-12.

If you have any Mediasite issues, please contact mediasite-help@ncsu.edu.

For all regularly scheduled server maintenance windows, please see the Updates & Maintenance schedule.

Deleting Recycle Bins

Files in the recycle bin will, over time, consume large amounts of space on the Mediasite Servers. In order to reduce the number of unnecessary files in the management portal, free up disk space, and help the management portal run faster, DELTA will be emptying recycle bins as often as every two weeks during regular maintenance windows.

SSL Conversion

During the May maintenance window (week of May 11), we will begin converting the Mediasite enterprise service to SSL (secure socket layer) which provides us improved security and the ability for users to embed videos within Moodle (or any other secure environment). We will provide further details in mid-April.
