Office of Faculty Development call for participation in fall reading circles
I am passing along this information from my colleagues in the Office of Faculty Development.
Are you interested in exploring how teaching might facilitate more and better learning? Or in investigating what teachers can do in order to maximize learning for their students? If so, join your colleagues in discussing these and related issues in our reading circles. This fall semester we will be using the book, Learner-Centered Teaching: Five Key Changes to Practice by Maryellen Weimer in our reading circles.
The Office of Faculty Development will also be hosting Maryellen Weimer, here on campus, April 8, 2011, for a workshop and to meet with reading group participants.
Registration Deadline is Thursday September 16th.
Reading circles are small self-regulated groups of faculty who meet several times to discuss a common book. OFD will purchase the books, facilitate the formation of small reading groups, and arrange a schedule for initial meetings. All you have to do is tell us when you are available. Participating reading circle teams are invited to use the OFD rooms in Clark Hall for meetings or may choose to volunteer potential meeting sites elsewhere. During the first meeting, each group will decide its own meeting frequency and schedule. Given the length of the book, we anticipate that the reading circles will meet for 5-9 times during the semester.
In return for receiving the text, participants agree to attend reading circle meetings, contribute to discussions, take their turn leading their reading circle (shared leadership), and complete a brief evaluation of the experience.

You will be requested to identify meeting times that would work for you and submit the form. Indicate all the times you are available as well as your top three preferences. The more times you indicate, the greater the likelihood that we can match you with colleagues at a chosen time.
