A new Distance Education course, FS 201: Food Science and the Consumer, was recently featured in Perspectives Online, the magazine of the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences (CALS) at NC State. In the article Dr. Keith Harris discusses his enthusiasm toward teaching about the science behind food, his experience in creating an instructionally-sound online course, and his path to laboratory-based research.
Harris received an IDEA grant from DELTA in 2008 for assistance in creating the distance education version of FS 201. Working with a team at DELTA led by project manager and instructional designer Lee Ann Gillen, Harris created an online version of this popular face-to-face, introductory-level course. He incorporated short videos and Webisodes to deliver course content, all of which was deployed in Moodle. For his work on FS 201, Harris received the 2009 Gertrude Cox Award for Innovative Technology Enhanced Courses.
