Highlights by Strategic Goals

The stories featured in the Annual Report are examples of how we collaboratively “think and do” in partnership with our colleagues and stakeholders across the university to reach our goals. We align with NC State’s strategic plan to impact every aspect of student success through our many services. This year’s stories include course design, WolfWare tools updates, outreach and engagement progress, Online and Distance Education success and DELTA’s culture of collaboration, transparency and efficiency in all of our operations. DELTA Goal 1:  Leverage learning technologies to improve student success.

[Supports University Goals 1 and 2]

Improving student success has always been DELTA’s goal. This past year was no different. Our initiatives supporting Goal 1 resulted in the following accomplishments:

  • Completed eight large course redesigns.
  • Initiated seven large course redesign studies for courses DELTA has previous redesigned and/or are still working on. Early findings from this work yielded positive results.
  • Designed and developed materials for 11 Online and Distance Education courses that included integrating virtual reality elements.
  • Refined the Learning Analytics Processor to make student learning data available in Moodle more visible for instructors and advisors.
  • Disseminated best practices across campus with a 56 percent increase in faculty enrollments in training opportunities.
  • Promoted Faculty Fellows in providing numerous one-to-one consultations and teaching nine seminars with 118 unique enrollments.
  • Supported an increased demand for course proctoring with 55,407 exams proctored at our campus facilities, 5,181 remote exams and 1,417 Disability Services exams for a total of 62,059 exams proctored by DELTA Testing Services.
  • Resolved nearly 5,000 support tickets by DELTA help desks in FY 2017 — 3,606 by LearnTech and 1,236 by Mediasite. LearnTech had a 20 percent increase in help calls outside of 8 a.m. – 5 p.m. business hours.

 

Wolfpack Wellness

DELTA teamed with University Recreation and Campus Enterprises to develop Wolfpack Wellness, an introduction to life-school balance for incoming first-year students using gamification.

Mediasite Enterprise Dashboard

The Mediasite Enterprise Dashboard also allows the Mediasite team to see current patterns of storage usage to better predict how the system will grow in the future.

 

DELTA Goal 2:  Lead the research, implementation and support of innovative, scalable and reliable learning technologies and methodologies.

[University Goals 1 and 3]

DELTA continues to lead the way in researching, implementing and supporting learning technologies. Our initiatives supporting Goal 2 resulted in the following accomplishments:

  • Contributed actively to the Moodle Community by providing 22 ideas/code snippets and/or code development projects to Moodle core.
  • Upgraded storage, server and network environments as part of a technology refresh to increase and sustain capacity within enterprise technology systems.
  • Added new tools to WolfWare including the WolfWare Email List tool and WolfWare WordPress.
  • Obtained an enterprise-level license for Top Hat.
  • Supported an increased faculty use of Mediasite outside of DELTA classrooms with 305 courses being recorded, a 44 percent increase from last year.
  • Supported an increase in Mediasite views by 14 percent and the number of presentations available for viewing by 31 percent; Mediasite content had 1.6 million views from 46,935 unique users.
  • Researched new and emerging technology applications including mobile learning options, LMS gamification exploration and and applying gamification principles to projects such as Wolfpack Wellness 101.
  • Made significant advances in the design and production of virtual reality experiences for online education focusing on improving the process of capturing 360° video, integrating interactive elements and identifying methods for large-scale deployment across devices.
  • Supported nine DELTA classrooms that served a total of 4,301 students, 3,316 on- campus and 985 Online and Distance Education students.
  • Facilitated more than 2,500 hours of interactive synchronous learning/videoconferencing (via H.323) including 1,124 hours of multi-site connectivity with UNC system campuses, national and international institutions.
  • Managed 120 mini-studio hours, 115 hours of studio production and 75 hours of field production, in service to Online and Distance Education initiatives.

DELTA Goal 3:  Leverage learning technologies to support Outreach and Engagement activities.

[University Goals 4 and 5]

DELTA made significant progress in outreach and engagement activities by leveraging the use of our enterprise technologies to support activities. Our initiatives supporting Goal 3 resulted in the following accomplishments:

  • Increased Wolfware Outreach student enrollments by 30 percent to 5,021.
  • Hosted 309 non-credit courses on the WolfWare Outreach server from six colleges and three divisions managed by eighteen WolfWare Outreach Coordinators. DELTA identified and partnered with five new WolfWare Outreach programs.
  • Made significant progress in REPORTER:
    • Developed a new billing reporting module
    • Integrated with Security Access System, Wolfware Project and Outreach, and PeopleSoft Human Resources and Financials
    • Non-Credit Transcripts
    • Ensured REPORTER is fully PCI compliant
    • Designated REPORTER as the registration system for WolfWare Outreach services
  • Created a self-service roster tool for WolfWare Outreach Coordinators to upload rosters.
  • Developed initial FAQ pages for WolfWare Outreach participants.
  • Developed content to use in both credit and non-credit offerings.
  • Increased Registrations from launch in January 2016, to date is a little less than 40,000.
  • Processed more than $1.3 million in payments plus $115,000 in refunds.
  • Offered 1,925 courses.

 

State Authorization Reciprocity Agreement (SARA)
Out-of-state students are able to easily enroll in NC State’s programs due to the State Authorization Reciprocity Agreement (SARA).

DELTA Goal 4: Support the creation and delivery of programs and courses that meet strategic enrollment planning and workforce needs for North Carolina and beyond.

Creating and delivering programs and courses that meet workforce needs was a priority for DELTA. Our initiatives supporting Goal 4 resulted in the following accomplishments:

  • Offered 95 degrees, certificates and teacher licensure programs in a variety of disciplines, with 19,565 students enrolled in 2,885 courses and sections taught by 810 NC State faculty.
  • Conducted and implemented 10 environmental scans and feasibility studies to gauge demand for new Online and Distance Education programs.
  • Provided marketing and student recruitment for 22 Online and Distance Education programs.
  • Coordinated the revision of Online and Distance Education’s new website.
  • Participated in five military fairs for student recruitment.
  • Implemented a social media strategy to increase program awareness. Started three ad campaigns resulting in 1,763 new followers across Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.

DELTA Goal 5:  Promote collaboration, transparency and efficiency in DELTA operations, programs and services.

[University Goal 4]

Promoting collaboration, transparency and efficiency was seen throughout our programs, operations and services this year. Initiatives supporting Goal 5 resulted in the following accomplishments:

  • Implemented communication strategies to create awareness of DELTA
    • Created materials for Online and Distance Education programs and a DELTA services brochure.
    • Added Online and Distance Education News and DELTA News blogs.
    • Developed new communication strategies for DELTA Testing Centers including new videos, signage and print information materials.
  • Increased usage across DELTA of TeamworkPM to manage projects with 183 active projects.
  • Supported the project coordination team as they worked on more than 110 projects this year which includes collaboration with every team in DELTA on at least one project.
  • Transitioned many of our Help Desk functions to ServiceNow aligning with the university’s IT strategic plan.
  • Successfully moved DELTA staff from Venture II and D.H. Hill Library to the Center for Technology and Innovation.
