Distribution and Broadcasting

VCS distributes and broadcasts video programming for university- and state-affiliated organizations.

Video streaming

VCS can produce live or on-demand Webcasts of courses, videoconferences, and events in streaming video and audio for the NC State community and beyond. Users access video streamed events on their computers’ Real Media players. Video streaming services are free to NC State faculty and staff.

Duplication

Duplicating of a maximum run of ten VHS tapes, CDs, or DVDs is available on a fee-for-service basis (See VCS rates.) Video formats available are DVD, VHS, SVHS, Mini DV, DVC Pro, and Beta SP.

Duplicating services are subject to copyright restrictions. Copyright media cannot be duplicated.

Satellite Uplinking and Downlinking

VCS can arrange for satellite uplinking (transmitting) services of KU-band and C-band through an arrangement with NCREN New Window. NCREN provides broadcast quality, two-way interactive capabilities across North Carolina. It also features the nation’s first broadcast-quality, fully interactive MPEG2 video-over-IP distance learning environment.

We have satellite downlinking (receiving) capability for a wide variety of KU- and C-band analog and digital programming. Downlinking services are on a fee-for-service basis (See VCS rates), and the client is responsible for registration or connection fees charged by third-party providers. Uplinking services are billed directly by NCREN.

Channel 18

After VCS records your class in one of NC State’s distance education classrooms, the NC State Distance Education New Window office can arrange to offer your course on the Cooperating Raleigh Colleges Cable Channel. The class is broadcast approximately one week after it is recorded.
