One of the most significant challenges of distance or online education is to develop effective virtual laboratory experiences. This may include 3D simulation, role-play games, mail-order lab kits, video based instruction or all of the above. DELTA’s vLabs initiative is an effort to further promote and share these solutions with NC State faculty.

PP315, Principles of Plant Pathology
Learning Objectives
Expose students to plant pathology laboratory processes and improve their decision-making in disease diagnosis.
Solution
A Plant Pathology virtual laboratory and interactive game. Students learn how to identify the characteristics of an unhealthy plant, form a hypothesis, run tests at a number of lab stations, and develop a diagnosis based on their observations and test results. Through this experience students become familiar with the equipment and environment of a typical plant pathology lab. This game has a built-in data-mining tool to help the instructor assess the effectiveness of the tool for student learning.
