Elluminate at NC State
Beta Program
During the Spring semester of 2007, we will be offering a beta version of our synchronous learning service featuring Elluminate Live. There are several things about the beta program that you should know if you are planning to use Elluminate Live this Spring.
- We cannot guarantee that Elluminate Live will be stable. You should always have a backup plan for your synchronous sessions. At the very least, you should be willing to reschedule sessions if there are technical difficulties.
- We do not have any way to connect Elluminate Live to our campus Registration and Records system. As faculty with moderator accounts, you will be able to schedule sessions and send announcements to anyone you wish, but we will not be able to keep your class roll up to date for you.
- We are creating daily backups of the recordings. If something happens to the Elluminate server, we can restore it to the day before. It is possible that a few sessions will be lost if there are server problems. You should have a backup plan if your recorded sessions are lost or corrupted. For instance, you may wish to distribute presentation materials or notes for review or you may want to re-record certain parts of your session.
- We can make moderator accounts for faculty, staff and teaching assistants. We cannot make moderator accounts for students. If you wish to have student-led sessions (for group work, perhaps) please let us know by writing to LearnTech and we will create a generic account for your class that your students can use to create sessions and log in as moderators.
- We are providing support for Elluminate Live sessions in a variety of ways, but generally we are only staffing our faculty learning technology helpdesk from Monday through Friday, 9:00am to 5:00pm.
- There is currently no way for us to generate attendance reports for live sessions or to generate reports of who viewed recorded sessions.
Our experience with Elluminate Live so far has been good and we have not had problems with stability or data loss. We believe that Elluminate Live is a good product and we have no hesitation in recommending its use for NC State classes. We will work hard to ensure that your experience with synchronous learning is a positive one.
If you would like to use Elluminate Live, you can get a moderator account.
