Online Course

Creating an Online Course

  1. Sit down with an instructional designer, or someone familiar with online courses; perhaps another faculty member in your department. Discuss your course, focusing on what you want your students to learn, what type of students you have, the teaching styles that you are comfortable with, and other constraints or challenges you foresee.
  2. Develop a description of the course. If possible, do not settle on specific technologies at this point. But do have specific ideas about content presentation, activities for your students, and assessment of their learning.
  3. Talk with people familiar with instructional technologies available to you and discuss the options for implementing your specific ideas. If possible, look at examples of similar courses. Discuss what you like and what you don’t like. Choose the options you want to pursue.
  4. Decide how much of the vision you’ve created in steps 2 and 3 you are going to try and achieve for the first iteration. Be comfortable with not having your ideal course immediately.
  5. Set a timeline. Do your best to avoid developing things during the semester while you are teaching.
  6. After creating the first iteration, teach it and get feedback from your students. Compare this feedback with your impressions of the course and the things you were still planning to do to improve the course. Make changes to the course vision, if necessary.
  7. Repeat steps 4 through 6.
