Question:
What do the different user roles in Vista do?
Answer:
There are several different roles in Vista. Below is important information on
what each role is and what the role allows the person to do. Each definition
also contains a list of all the "tabs" that the user will have access
to in Vista.
*See the table that describes the various tab access:

========
The Student role: This role is intended for students enrolled in the section.
They are listed in the Grade Book and can receive grades. Students can
participate in course activities such as posting discussions, completing
assignments, and participating in chat rooms. If a user is enrolled as a student
in a Vista section, they cannot have any other role in that section.
========
The Auditor role: Auditors are identical to students except they do not
receive a final grade at the end of the semester. Auditors have the same full
access to course that students have, so they can post discussions, participate
in chats, submit assignments, etc. They generate grades in the grade book, but
their scores are not included in student performance statistics. If a user is
enrolled as an auditor in a Vista section, they cannot have any other role in
that section.
========
The Teaching Assistant role: Teaching Assistants have access to the Student
View tab and to some functions of the Teach tab. Exactly which functions a
Teaching Assistant can access is determined by the Section Instructor.
========
The Instructor role: Section Instructors have access to the Teach tab, which
includes the Grade Book, Groups Manager, Student Reports & Tracking, and
other teaching-related functions. Instructors do not have access to the Build
tab, and so cannot design or build components of the section. Instructors who
also need access to the Build tab should request Instructor/Designer access.
========
The Designer role: Section Designers have access to the Build tab, which
allows them to add or update content, add and remove tools, and customize he
appearance of the course at the section level. Section Designers also get
access to the Student View tab.
========
The Instructor/Designer: Selecting Instructor/Designer means that the user
gets all the permissions of a Section Instructor and a Section Designer, thus
they will have access to the Teach tab, the Build tab, and the Student View
tab.
