Solution Summary:

Follow the published "WolfWare Rules" at http://wolfware.ncsu.edu/

Full Solution:

Problem: Non-course content, inappropriate linking, or other possible misuse of the courses.ncsu.edu server and URLs. Solution: Please follow the official published "WolfWare Rules" at http://classic.wolfware.ncsu.edu/ which are summarized here: Appropriate Use of WolfWare Course Lockers: The courses.ncsu.edu web site serves content that instructors develop and store in their WolfWare course lockers at /afs/eos/courses/. The resources that support WolfWare are intended for delivery of course materials only and not for non-course content. Files must be located inside the www subdirectory of the section locker or the common/www subdirectory of the course locker. Files located in other subdirectories of the course locker will not be served by the courses.ncsu.edu webserver. Linking to content outside the WolfWare course locker should be done with standard hypertext links on web pages. Inappropriate Use of WolfWare Course Lockers: The courses.ncsu.edu web server will not serve any files located outside WolfWare course-locker file space at /afs/eos/courses/. Do not use symbolic or "soft" links to pathnames of files on other servers in order to serve those files through WolfWare servers and URLs. Please link to content on other file systems through standard hyperlinking on web pages rather than through pathname aliasing and shortcuts. The courses.ncsu.edu webserver also cannot be used to serve research or non-course materials. Examples of Inappropriate Symlinking to Files on Non-WolfWare Servers: Personal web pages that reside in faculty, staff, or student user directories in /afs/eos/users/ and /afs/unity/users/ cannot be delivered through a courses.ncsu.edu URL by means of a symlink from the course locker to personal file space (a standard hyperlink from a web page is fine). A server is already in place to handle the demands of serving personal pages. The correct URL for personal pages is http://www4.ncsu.edu/~username. Professional web pages for faculty and staff are best delivered from locker space other than the personal home directory, e.g., course locker, department web space, etc. Research materials, software, and other non-course materials must reside in file space created for their purpose. These lockers can be requested and set up at http://www.ncsu.edu/it/rulesregs/filespace/unitylockers-sop.html For more information on WolfWare, see http://classic.wolfware.ncsu.edu/ and http://courses.ncsu.edu/.
