What do I need to access Vista?

Return to FAQs

Solution Summary:

Preparing your computer settings for Vista

Full Solution:

Problem: I need to use Vista for my coursework. What do I need to set up to get everything working correctly? Solution: Students and faculty can access Vista through a supported browser such as Internet Explorer, Firefox or Safari. While the case may be that what is "supported" is not the most up to date, Blackboard recommends using a supported version for best results when using Vista. The first thing you'll want to do is run the Browser Check, linked from the Vista home page. There is also a link to the Browser Check after you've logged in, in the top right-hand corner of your screen. The Browser Check will evaluate your current setup and provide you with step-by-step instrucitons on fixing any problems you might have with your browser. Each item will either receive a green check or, for the items that need fixing, a red x. Each item that receives a red x will also list ways to fix what is wrong. Additionally, we at NC State also maintain a few pages that will direct you to installing what you need. A current list of the supported browsers: http://vista.ncsu.edu/help/browsers/ Blackboard suggests that you use a supported version of Java, click here for more details and to download: http://vista.ncsu.edu/help/java/ Some online content may require additional browser plug-ins to view (for example, the free Adobe Acrobat Reader may be used for viewing PDF files). Listed here are several commonly used plug-ins. http://vista.ncsu.edu/help/plugins/ For more help on this, please consult the OIT Help Desk at 515-HELP, or at help@ncsu.edu.
