Jainism is one of the oldest surviving religions that originated in India. Jains believe that every soul is divine and has the potential to achieve God-consciousness. Jainism was revived by a lineage of 24 enlightened ascetics culminating with Mahavira (600 BCE). In the modern world, it is a small but influential religious minority with about five million followers in India, and successful growing immigrant communities in North America, Western Europe, the Far East, Australia and elsewhere. Historically, Jains have influenced other religious, ethical, political and economic spheres in India and beyond. The most renowned nonviolent figure of our times Mahatma Gandhi was inspired by nonviolence and other Jain practices. Gandhi in turn inspired Dr. Martin Luther King, Nelson Mandela, Dalai Lama, and several other nonviolent movements globally. |
