Course Description: Explores the science of entomology by focusing on the basic principles of systematics, morphology, physiology, development, behavior, ecology, and control of insects. Field trips provide opportunities to collect insects and study their adaptations toa wide variety of natural environments.

Lab Information :
DE students may attend on-campus labs and field trips held weekly 12:25-3:15 pm on Thursdays or Fridays. In either case, they must submit an insect collection and demonstrate mastery of insect identification through lab practicals taken in person.

NCSU Campus Visits : Students may wish to come to campus to obtain collecting equipment and for help with insect identification.

Students taking the course via distance education must make individual arrangement with the instructor for taking the quizzes, exams and lab practicals, and final exam. Options include:
1. Testing with other students during the scheduled on-campus class period.
2. Testing with the instructor or TA at an alternate time on the scheduled day.
3.Testing with the instructor or TA one day prior to the scheduled day
4. Testing with a certified proctor on the scheduled day.

Students choosing option #4 must make proctoring arrangements within the first two weeks of the semester. Other Attendance Requirements : There are four three hour field trips scheduled during lab. These trips give students an opportunity for supervised collecting of specimens for their insect collection. Distance Education students may join a lab or go on their own.

Course Requirements:
Insect collection (consisting of about 50 specimens that fill specific taxonomic and ecological categories)
Four quizzes
Two hour exams plus final
Two lab practicals
Homework assignments and discussions
Course Materials:
Insect Collecting Supplies: Small jars, ethyl alcohol, dissecting scissors, forceps, insect pins, ultra-fine-point pen with indelible black ink, clear nail polish
Optional Equipment: insect net, killing jar, digital camera with macro capability
