Course Description: This service-learning course provides interdisciplinary and experientially based opportunities for students to engage in both (online) classroom and community based exploration that examines issues of relevance of history, literature, language and cultural preservation to African American people/communities in the African Diaspora through the lens of the Gullah/Geechee Nation. Students will examine historical accounts, as well as aspects of language, literature, culture and social justice. Students in this course will participate in an alternative spring break educational excursion to Charleston and St. Helena Island, South Carolina, March 13-20, 2009. Additional fees will apply to the educational excursion. An alternative project requirement may be applied to those not able to complete the educational excursion.

NCSU Campus Visits : One class meeting will be required at the beginning of the semester to review the course requirements. Those not able to travel to campus may be able to participate in the class meeting via conference call.
